Chipped CPU

This time I put out a guide to what not to do with your CPUs. It is what I call chipping the cpu. Something which can't be fixed. But of course, there are ways to spare your cpu from the hidden dangers of the big heat sinks.

Here is my old 1 Ghz which I left untouched for a year after it wouldn't turn on again. Only recently when I tired to figure out what was wrong with it, did I notice the damage.

If you look at the corners of the heat tranferring surface, you'll see that the edges has been chipped off. Not only on one corner, but also on two others. Most likely this damage can be caused by either: Incorrect heat sink size or type; Too much vibration or rocking of the heat sink; A sudden impact; or possibly an oversized heat sink.

The Solution to avoid this Incident is to buy a cpu shim guard, or simply be very careful.

I hope this little demonstration and accident of mine, becomes a good warning for you in the near future. Just remember that the chip is very easy to break, heat isn't your only enemy.
